As days pass more slowly, the heat never subsides, typical crowds grow thin and downtown parking is unusually easy to find, residents of Athens know that summer has arrived. At The National, summertime brings added variety to our seasonal menu through bundles of fresh local produce, monthly wine dinners, King of Pops served all day, and the thrilling favorite – pimientos de padrón.
If you have yet to experience the rush, the gamble, the incredible flavor of pimientos de padrón, you have sorely missed out. Pimientos de padrón are small green peppers that originally hail from Padrón, a municipality of Galicia in Northwest Spain. At The National, we are fortunate to be able to locally source these unique peppers during the summer months. A Galician phrase “Os pementos de Padrón, uns pican e outros non” sums up the experience, saying “Padrón peppers, some are hot and some are not.” Served simply with sea salt, the majority of these peppers boast a delightful sweet and mild flavor. However adventure-seeking diners ought not grow too complacent because a single bite of the right pepper will set your mouth on fire, and there’s no way to tell which one it will be. It’s Russian Roulette in a snack food, and here at The National, we LOVE it. Look for padróns in about a month.
And don’t forget, King of Pops popsicles are now served right at The National to eat in or to go all day long. These artisan popsicles are the perfect cool down on a hot summer day, and the exciting flavors change all the time.
So come share your summer with The National and enjoy a great meal that reflects local flavors, seasonal produce and global inspiration.
