Outstanding in the Field stages outdoor dining events across North America, placing its long signature table at country farms and ranches, in urban gardens and sea caves, on mountaintops and sandy beaches. Wherever it goes, OITF’s mission is the same: To re-connect diners to the land and the origins of their food and introduce them to the local farmers and food artisans whose good work brings nourishment to the table. Ingredients for the meals are often sourced within inches of diners’ seats. After a tour of the host site, everyone settles in: farmers, ranchers, fishermen, food artisans and guests serving each other at the communal table. “The last time we visited Woodland Gardens was in 2004 on our first tour of North America,” says OITF founding chef and artist Jim Denevan. “Outstanding in the Field has covered a lot of miles since then, and our host farmers Celia Barss & John Cooper will show us what’s changed and what’s stayed the same. We’re glad to be back and excited to work with the exciting chef duo of Peter Dale from the National and Jake Jacovino of Five & Ten.” This event is a benefit for the Southern Sustainable Agricultural Working Group. SSAWG’s mission is to empower and inspire farmers, individuals and communities in the South to create an agricultural system that is ecologically sound, economically viable, socially just and humane.
